A major aim of PASEF’s Mission is to facilitate fully informed and successful retirement decisions and transitioning among the senior faculty. Thus, PASEF provides a robust program of resources to support faculty.
Most visible is the Planning for Retirement seminar series that focuses on topics of most concern to faculty during the process. (Listed in the accordion below).
Introduced in May 2023 and recommended for all faculty.
Estate and Trust Planning and Death Tax Concepts. This written outline details basic estate planning and death tax concepts. It covers the basic background information on death taxes and estate and trust law governing disposition of assets at death which will help clients be better educated decision makers with respect to their estate plans.
Personal Estate Planning Checklist – Index. This is a great tool we’ve developed to help clients get their personal asset and related estate planning information organized for their families.
Introduced in December 2021, the panel included two faculty members describing their experiences and a financial advisor. See the December 7, 2022 video here.
Introduced in AY2019-2020, the first seminar focused on the Continuing Care Retirement Community, and a panel of Members spoke candidly about their decisions and transitions to CCRC living (PASEF’s Guide to Retirement Communities summarizes information about the CCRC model, presents helpful suggestions for selecting this option, and provides a list of local CCRCs in which Penn retirees are currently living). Planned for future years are explorations of aging-in-place options, over 55 communities, Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) and so on. Each year, the Department of Human Resources invites experts from Medicare and Social Security to enlighten retiring and retired faculty on these two programs. In January 2024, Human Resources and Health Advocate presented Retiree Benefits and Medicare and TIAA presented Social Security Benefits Planning.

Annually, PASEF updates and publishes The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Faculty Retirement, which is available on line and is also distributed in print form to attendees at the Planning for Retirement seminars. The highly regarded Guide contains detailed information about retirement options, timelines, negotiating options with one’s dean, and accessing the range of benefits that accrue to faculty following retirement.
